Ronda's baby quilts

I mentioned in the previous post that my friend had come to visit and sew for a few days this summer.   She managed to get these two baby quilts together, and she was focused.  We had planned some hammock/reading time in the backyard, but we only did that once.

These are only the second and third quilts she has made.  She is still early in her quilting journey.
This one is a Yellow Brick Road, pattern by Atkinson designs.    Greys and whites and blacks, little foxes and bears and paw prints.    6 fat quarters, no borders makes a lovely baby sized quilt, 36x45.
The colour is all on the back, with this lovely cuddle fabric that spells out baby.  I put a box meander on this quilt.

This quilt has horses and skates and snowflakes.   The piecing pattern is Quarter Sections by Highway 10 designs.  I also do this one with 6 FQ, no borders, and it is a very similar size, approx 37x45.
I quilted a ribbon meander on this one which adds a lovely flowing texture.

and this quilt also got a cuddle backing.

Pathways

Pathways is a quilt I made this summer as a gift for a special young man.   I loved working with the Moda Shibori fabrics, and it was a simple, yet effective quilt to make.  I think I'll make this pattern again.   12 FQ and background.

I was able to put these blocks together in July when my friend came for a few days and we sewed.  It was lots of fun to visit and sew.
 Before quilting.
and the backing--a lovely red cuddle, as the recipients favorite color is red.  edited to add the pattern source as ive had a few inquiries it is called Garden Variety by Debby Maddy https://www.debbiemaddy.com/products/gardenvarietydownloadpattern

Triangles

Katherine made this baby sized quilt with many different variations of a triangle.  I just loved looking at this as I quilted it, looking at all the variations.

Yellow Brick Road

I don't know how many of these Yellow Brick Roads I've quilted for the church, but it's a pattern that never gets old.    This particular quilt got a box meander.
I hadn't realized until looking at these photos today how strong a design those little triangles are in that fabric.

Two at Once

These are quilts for the church, and as you can see, I loaded and quilted two at once, it's a very efficient way to use a wide backing.

I also pieced them at the same time--gives a little more variety in the blocks.   I've made quilts with 4 strips and with 5 strips before, so thought I'd try 6.  It's a strip tube quilt, each block has 3 colored strips and 3 neutral strips.  So 42 colored and 42 neutral strips resulted in 2 lap quilts.

With these tops I had to let go any hope of great points--the neutral strips were often wider than 2 1/2", but I didn't figure this out until well into the process....the great thing about using the strip tube ruler is that the blocks are all square, so they go together nicely, it's just a matter of forgiving the points, and once these quilts are washed and loved a little, the points won't matter.

The two tops are quilted differently--this one got a square boxy meander...

and the second one what I call a Maori fishhook.

Simplicity #9

As you can tell by the blog title, this being the 9th quilt of this pattern I've quilted, it's a great pattern, Simplicity by Cozy Quilt Designs.    This was a neat one to quilt, because it is laid out as the pattern calls for, which I haven't seen since maybe quilt #1.   That's part of what makes it a great pattern--is you can play with the block layout.

I love this angled shot--you can see how carefully Bobbie laid out her fabrics--getting diagonals of the same fabrics.  It adds a really neat dimension to the quilt.  The pattern calls for jelly rolls, but Bobbie used yardage, a mixture of batik and printed cotton, and cut it into 2 1/2" strips.
Bobbie asked for straight line quilting, so I quilted a random sized modern square spiral, which gives a great texture to this quilt.

This is a very heavy quilt, as Bobbie put this minkee on the back, and it is heavy on a quilt this large.

Handprints

This is such a marvelous quilt!  Nancy and her sister Peg organized the ENTIRE extended family to each put a handprint on a block...and then assembled it for their mothers 90th Birthday.

 The label was a block.
Blocks were left for Dorothy and her husband (it was a surprise at the birthday party), and they have since placed their handprints on the quilt.
I"m disappointed the house block is blurry--it represents the home Dorothy's children grew up in.  The house was only sold this year, so it is very fitting to have it on the quilt.
Hands can be hard with little ones--they don't like to unclench them, so these would be Great Grandchild's feet.  I love the smear of blue on the side of the block--even feet can be tricky with babies.  What a great time capsule

I love the creativity with the two-toned hand.
and for family members that have passed, there were line drawings.  What a special way to include them.

Yellow and Black quilt - Playa del Sol

I should have asked Nancy the name of this pattern, but I didn't.  Nancy tells me this pattern is Playa del Sol She made this quilt for her son.  The fabrics are fun--lots of stars and dogs.

Nancy put a soft grey fleece on the back.  Very cozy.

Yellow Brick Roads

If you've been reading this blog for any period of time, you'll have seen a lot of Yellow Brick Road Quilts.  We make them at the church for our quilting ministry, and here's 4 more that were done in the spring.

This photo shows how I get two quilts on one backing--if you quilt them at the same time you can fit two 49-50" quilts on one 108" wide backing.
This quilt below is a modified YBR pattern, and it got big enough without added borders.

I never get tired of the batik fabrics we use in these quilts.

And this one below is also a modified YBR--Sandy had some smaller fabric pieces for this one, so she reduced the block size and decided to sash the blocks.
