Ronda's baby quilts

I mentioned in the previous post that my friend had come to visit and sew for a few days this summer.   She managed to get these two baby quilts together, and she was focused.  We had planned some hammock/reading time in the backyard, but we only did that once.

These are only the second and third quilts she has made.  She is still early in her quilting journey.
This one is a Yellow Brick Road, pattern by Atkinson designs.    Greys and whites and blacks, little foxes and bears and paw prints.    6 fat quarters, no borders makes a lovely baby sized quilt, 36x45.
The colour is all on the back, with this lovely cuddle fabric that spells out baby.  I put a box meander on this quilt.

This quilt has horses and skates and snowflakes.   The piecing pattern is Quarter Sections by Highway 10 designs.  I also do this one with 6 FQ, no borders, and it is a very similar size, approx 37x45.
I quilted a ribbon meander on this one which adds a lovely flowing texture.

and this quilt also got a cuddle backing.

Yellow Brick Roads

I had a chance to quilt these three Yellow Brick Road quilts for my church.  Sadly, we are moving though the inventory quickly this year, and so I wanted these done before they were needed.

This one has already been gifted.

Yellow Brick Road

I don't know how many of these Yellow Brick Roads I've quilted for the church, but it's a pattern that never gets old.    This particular quilt got a box meander.
I hadn't realized until looking at these photos today how strong a design those little triangles are in that fabric.

Yellow Brick Road - turquoise and chocolate

There's no yellow in this quilt, but that is the name of the pattern.    I love how that zinger (narrow little border with a little zing to it) just glows.  I wouldn't have come up with that color on my own--that was Colleen's vision.
This is a quilt for the church also, I guess when I feel like I haven't been piecing much lately, I have to recall this quilt and the strip tube quilts from the previous post.

Yellow Brick Roads

If you've been reading this blog for any period of time, you'll have seen a lot of Yellow Brick Road Quilts.  We make them at the church for our quilting ministry, and here's 4 more that were done in the spring.

This photo shows how I get two quilts on one backing--if you quilt them at the same time you can fit two 49-50" quilts on one 108" wide backing.
This quilt below is a modified YBR pattern, and it got big enough without added borders.

I never get tired of the batik fabrics we use in these quilts.

And this one below is also a modified YBR--Sandy had some smaller fabric pieces for this one, so she reduced the block size and decided to sash the blocks.

Quilts for the Church

As part of the Quilting Ministry at Symons Valley United Church, I quilt liturgical wallhangings, such as Covenants , and also the compassionate quilts made to give to people in the congregation as needed.

We had, at one point a few years ago, built up an inventory, combined with a few years where people stayed relatively healthy, and thus we hadn't had to make compassionate quilts for some time.  When the quilts were all gone, we had to start making again.   These two were needed and gifted almost as soon as they were finished.  So, they have found their homes, and are providing comfort to people as a tangible reminder of the love, hugs and prayers from the remainder of the congregation.

The compassionate quilts for adults, to date, are all Yellow Brick Roads, and all batik fabrics.  For a very long time, we had leftovers from the permanent banners in the sanctuary that went into the quilts, (and scraps from the quilts that predated the banners in the banners), but we have exhausted that supply now.
One of the quilters says her husband even recognizes the pattern now, when he sees it.  He should!  I  think we've made about 40 of these.
we use a very plain backing, as members of the congregation will sign their well wishes on the back before it is gifted to the recipient.

I like to quilt these in pairs, as I can get two on the same wide backing.  The quilts usually measure about 49x50 (give or take an inner border)

This next one is for a child or youth when needed, the last time we made one it wasn't used for 7 years, so we hope to be as lucky with this one, and it can age well in our cabinet.

The fabrics in this are so fun, and, it  uses bits from the prior child/youth compassionate quilt, so there is that continuity.

Periodically we gift quilts to the elders (that's a much gentler and better word than Octogenarians--which is hard to determine, since some people age so very well, and we aren't allowed to ask)  in our congregation, unsigned, but able to be signed should the occasion arise.  We want the elders to be wrapped in our love when they are well, having reached such a lofty age, they shouldn't have to wait to be ill as well.  We are working on building our supply of these as well.

and this last little quilt has gone to the Foothills hospital, as part of the quilts my other guild makes for babies in a unit at the hospital.
